Will you be lonely this Christmas? The Happy Factor - Cosmopolitan Australia
December 12, 2016
SOOO Im for the most part a lover of Christmas. Or at least I say I am.
I came across this article by Emma Markeszic (@markyknowsbest) in this months Cosmopolitan Australia and actually, thank you Emma you have changed my mindset! Unfortunately I can't find the article online to link it to you here, but I'll summarize in brief..
"There's something about the festive season that acts like an ugly green eye monster, reminding you of what you don't have rather than what you do" - Show of half hearted arm raises and say "I'm Fiona from Shrek" to show your presence! We all want what other people have, fact of life, or none of us would ever strive to be better or go and get our hair dyed or buy new iphone.
"Ticking off an imaginary list in your head doesn't help you ace being happy at all. Boyfriend, Tick, Perfect birthday selfie, tick." How many people need to say their Fiona from Shrek again, I know I DO!
So the article goes on to talk about how you banish these thoughts from your head, and how do you do it? "What you have to do is, let them bubble up, and let them go"... "Replace those thoughts with pleasure bombs.. a reward you give yourself anytime of day"
I may have taken the reward yourself part a little TOO literally... rather than being depressed about my imaginary boyfriend forgetting to buy me a Christmas present altogether, I decided I would reward my single self with a Pandora ring.
So lets look at the pros about this:
1. I chose my own present, so I like it. No need to pretend I'm not wearing it just because im worried i might loose it. (Who's Fiona again?)
2. Guilt free. I don't have to worry about buying an equally as expensive or matching thoughtful present for my long suffering partner.
3. I don't have to remove it when I break up with myself.
"It's easy to feel sorry for yourself over the festive season, espesh if you let that niggling feeling everyone is having a better time than you take hold"
What do you do? You turn the negative into a positive, whatever you are feeling down about this festive season, turn at least 1 of those thoughts into a positive. Like buying a new Pandora ring. Trust me, you'll feel better!!
